Oracle Database Administrator, Amazon Digital

Member of DBA team responsible for supporting the Amazon Digital platform, including Kindle, Music, and Video on Demand. Primary DBA for 10-15 databases supporting both back-end processing and customer-facing mission critical. Approve all schema changes to production, and work with developers to design and/or review data structures. Assist other DBAs with support of digital fleet, including on-call rotation supporting 60-70 production databases.

 

Information Technology Services (ITS), The University of Texas at Austin (2000 – March, 2010)

Central IT organization with 350+ staff supporting a top-tier research university with 50,000 students and 20,000 faculty and staff.

 

Senior Oracle Database Administrator, ITS Systems (2008 – March, 2010)

Member of Oracle DBA team in Systems/UNIX group. Focus on architecting and supporting enterprise-wide Oracle database solutions for campus. Engage in high-level decision-making processes for technology selection and implementation.

 

·         Deployed and managed a two-node Oracle 11g cluster database (RAC) and two-node disaster recovery/standby cluster (Data Guard) on Sun Solaris and NetApp/NFS to support university authentication management infrastructure.

·         Deployed and managed a seven-node Oracle 11g cluster and five-node development/standby cluster on Red Hat Enterprise Linux and NetApp/NFS for campus-wide “Oracle as a Service” hosted database offering.

·         Worked closely with systems and storage administrators on a major project to consolidate five separate storage systems and associated databases onto one high-availability storage environment while minimizing service unavailability.

·         Supported critical third-party applications, providing performance tuning, analysis of complex dependencies, storage and hardware planning and provisioning, and coordination of vendor support channels for problem resolution.

·         Actively supported more than 30 Oracle databases covering a broad range of campus services including courseware, central identity and access management, telecommunications work order and ERP, and commodity service databases.

 

Oracle Database Administrator, ITS Applications (2007 – 2008)

Oracle DBA for application development and support group; backup Oracle DBA for central Systems/UNIX group. Work closely with developers and systems administrators across functional teams to support mission-critical services. Serve as data architect and consultant for internal development projects and mentor for application developers possessing mostly legacy/mainframe skill sets.

 

·         Architected first central IT offering of Oracle RAC as a high-availability solution for university-wide authentication management infrastructure and developed mid-tier software components.

·         Collaborated with Systems group on implementation of Oracle Grid Control for centralized management of Oracle infrastructure.

·         Supported databases for departmental development projects, including production services used campus-wide.

·         Oversaw migration of central Oracle RMAN backup infrastructure from tape- to disk-based for around 20 databases ranging from several to hundreds of gigabytes.

Develop data-driven applications and support third-party applications in software integration projects. Provide expert analysis and software development practices in a fast-paced development environment.

 

·         Assisted lead Oracle DBA with administration of databases relevant to the application development group. Performed database refreshes, imports and exports, and applied software patches.

·         Developed shell scripts to automate repeating tasks including database refreshes/clones, inter-application transaction reconciliation and routine monitoring of critical services.

·         Mentored developers in SQL, data loading, and data modeling and design.

·         Designed data model and database infrastructure for campus identity management system. Assisted project team with data analysis and requirements gathering, performance and storage requirements, and implementation of in-house Java-based identity management software.

·         Managed “BevoWare” software package providing desktop and network security software for students, faculty, and staff campus-wide. Led development team and managed software vendor relationships including software licensing negotiations and product adoption decisions.

·         Oversaw adoption of new trouble ticketing system for telecommunications infrastructure group. Worked with inventory warehouse, telephone switch, maintenance and cabling groups to integrate ticketing processes into existing work order and billing systems and migrate away from an outdated and unsupported legacy system.

 

Systems Analyst, ITS Software Distribution and Sales (2002 – 2005)

Web application developer and program administrator for software licensing and distribution group. Develop and maintain software sales and asset management system and manage real-time integration between back-end systems and the university’s online storefront.  Administer software site licenses covering 200,000 students, faculty and staff throughout the University of Texas System.

 

·         Developed software sales database and associated Web application and provided technical support for 5-person software licensing group.

·         Implemented processes to integrate software sales database with online storefront, providing real-time information transfer and rapid order processing.

·         Innovated new tools and procedures to improve efficiency of sales organization, replacing cumbersome letter-mailing with custom, automated e-mail systems, and providing customers with self-service applications to manage their own software licenses.

·         Administered campus and system-wide software licensing contracts for Symantec and Microsoft software. Worked with vendors to negotiate renewals and coordinated support efforts between campus technical support operations and software vendors.

 

Student Web Application Developer, ITS Windows Enterprise Services (2001 – 2002)

Develop Web applications in Macromedia ColdFusion and Microsoft Access for campus departments and business offices.  Provide support for campus software developers.
